As we age, skin loses collagen leading to the formation of lines and wrinkles. As well as this natural ageing process certain environmental and lifestyle factors (e.g. sunlight, pollution smoking) can all damage the health of your skin. In our dental clinic we offer a number of non-surgical treatments which help soften facial contours and lines.

 

The main areas we target are wrinkles, frown lines, crowsfeet and glabella (the line between the eyes). These lines can be smoothened out by muscle relaxing injections, dermal fillers or a combination of both.

 

 

 

Botox® is a purified version of botulinum toxin type A. Doctors have used this toxin for many years to treat a number of medical conditions as well as for cosmetic wrinkle reduction.

 

 

 

Botox® works by blocking the action of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is released from the end of nerves in order to stimulate muscles to contract. By blocking this action, Botox® temporarily reduces muscle contraction. By injecting it into specific facial muscles it will cause them to relax. Botox® injections can soften existing wrinkles as well as preventing future wrinkle formation.

 

 

Botox® is administered through a very fine needle and carefully injected into specific facial muscles. A sterile technique is used throughout.

 

 

Patients will experience very minor discomfort for a couple of seconds as the needle is introduced into the skin. As the needle is so fine, no anaesthetic is needed. Treatment is quick and treating all 3 major areas takes less than 10 minutes.

 

 

 

 

 

You may begin to notice the beneficial results within 3 days. The maximum effect is usually reached within 14 days. You will be reviewed by our doctor 2-3 weeks after you initial treatment to assess the response. If necessary you will be provided with free top-up treatment at this follow up visit.

 

 

During the first year the effects of each course last for 3-4 months. After the first year of treatment “top-up” treatments are needed roughly every 6 months.

The majority of patients will not experience any side effects. After the treatment you will have some tiny red marks at the injection sites, which will usually resolve within an hour. Occasionally, a small bruise can occur at the injection site which will resolve itself over a few days. In rare circumstances eye lid drooping may occur (known as “ptosis”). Proper regard to injection location and dosing should avoid this. Should it occur, it is reversible and can be treated with eye drops. We recommend that Botox® treatment should be performed by a qualified medical practitioner so that any side effects can be dealt with.

 

 

Anyone who is pregnant, breast feeding or suffers with a neuromuscular disorder should not receive this treatment.

 

EXCESSIVE SWEATING (HYPERHYDROSIS)

These are clear gels which contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the skin. They can be used to smoothen lines and wrinkles as well as add fullness to your lips. There are a number of products available, but we only use non-animal based products. Since these have a very low incidence of allergic reactions, patch testing is not needed. Over time the fillers are broken down by natural biological processes. We only use products which have been approved by the US Federal Drug Agency (FDA), meaning the products have undergone vigorous testing.

 

 

EYES- to smoothen resistant crows feet areas

 

BROW- to smoothen frown lines between the eyes

 

NOSE TO MOUTH LINES- smoothens the deep lines from the nose to corner of lips

 

MOUTH- smoothens vertical lines on the top lip

 

LIP ENHANCEMENT- fuller, more sensual lips by injection along the vermilion border in either or both upper and lower lip

 

 

 

The filler is injected with a very fine needle just under the skin.

 

 

Usually an anaesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area 20 minutes before the filler is injected. This ensures only minimal discomfort is experienced.

 

For treatment of lines above the lips or lip enhancement a dental block with local anaesthetic is administered to numb the area to ensure no pain is experienced.

 

 

The benefits usually last between 6-12 months

After treatment, skin may become inflamed and tender around the injection site. This normally resolves within 24-48 hours. There may be temporary lumpiness at the injection site. Allergic reaction to this dermal treatment can occur, but this is very rare.The lips are particularly sensitive and swelling as a result of enhancement with dermal fillers can last for several days.
